The most common questions and concerns I receive from parents are about practicing.

“How long should he practice?”
“I don’t think she practices enough.”
“How often should she practice?”
“I can’t get him practice.”

I have seen the most success with students who have a regular practice schedule. These students practice the same day and time each week. Some practice just a few days a week and others practice every morning before school.

How do I set up a practice schedule?

Have the student start by practicing as little as 15 minutes, 3 times a week. The key is that these practice sessions should be at the same time and day each week. For example, have the student practice piano for 15 minutes after dinner every Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Once the schedule is set and the student practices on a regular basis, the time of practice sessions can be extended by a few minutes or an additional practice day can be added to the schedule.

When students have a regular schedule, practicing becomes routine and habitual. Once practicing is a habit, parents and teachers won’t have to ask (or nag!) students to practice.
